All Rochester drivers convicted of Driving While Intoxicated, Driving with a Blood Alcohol Content of 0.08% or Greater, or Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated who wish to continue driving are required to have an ignition interlock device installed in every vehicle they drive.
This device is designed to keep individuals convicted of these offenses from operating a motor vehicle after having consumed alcohol.
The ignition interlock device is wired into the ignition system of the motor vehicle.
There is tube attached to the device, and prior to starting the vehicle, the driver is required to blow into this tube in a manner very similar to taking a breath test.
If the ignition interlock device detects alcohol on the driver’s breath, the driver will not be able to start the vehicle.
Because of concerns that a driver may get a friend or family member to blow into the ignition interlock device, the driver also will be required to blow into the tube at regular intervals after he or she begins driving.
A failure to blow into the tube or a result indicating alcohol on the driver’s breath will cause the vehicle to shut down.
The ignition interlock device keeps a record of all tests performed.
Some of them are even capable of transmitting the data directly back to the business that installed and maintains the device.
An unexplained failure to blow into the device or a positive test result may lead to additional consequences to the driver once it is reported to the court.
