How Do I Change Back To My Maiden Name After A Divorce?

The right to revert to your maiden name is such a significant issue that it’s a standard piece of your divorce settlement.

As with everything important, you’ll want to check in with your attorney to ensure that the right language is in the document, but otherwise, you should expect to be able to change your name on important identification as soon as you receive your final divorce judgment from the court.

To do so, just visit your county clerk’s office to file the judgment, and ask for three copies.

Take one copy to the DMV to change your driver’s license and take the other copy to the Social Security office to change your social security card.

The third copy probably won’t be needed, but if you have ID from a workplace or government service, it may be helpful to have a copy on hand.
