When someone comes to see me as a Rochester Divorce Lawyer for a consultation regarding a potential divorce, the two most important issues we discuss with them are children and money. They want to know what’s going to happen with respect to the children – who’s going to have custody of them, where will they live, how will they be supported, and who will maintain their health insurance? Those are the primary issues regarding the children.
The second set of important issues involve the couple’s property and money. In other words, what’s going to happen to the house? What’s going to happen with the retirement accounts? What about the vehicles? How will we deal with our credit card debt? Those are what we call property issues. When someone comes to us asking about divorce matters, they’re normally consulting us with regard to two kinds of issues – those dealing with children and those that deal with money.
